How do I stay laser focused- Family

As a mom, wife, business builder, leader, speaker, author, sister, daughter, and friend….I wear a lot of different hats.

But, at the end of the day I know that I need to be there for my family, so how do I find the time to spend quality time with them? I schedule time with my family first. It’s how I’ve set up my entire schedule. I know when I work and when I’m in Mom-mode. I plan vacations and fun times with my family about a year in advance. I know when we’ll have vacations or long weekends and then I don’t allow other things to be scheduled on those dates.

My husband: Schedule 1-on-1 time with each other like date lunches, date nights, fun things to do together at least every other week. Just get the babysitter…it’s an investment in your marriage. I also spend time chatting with my husband after the kids go to sleep. This is our time to catch up on our day.

My kids: From the moment I had my son almost seven years ago I knew I had to be with him as much as possible. I was working full time when I had him, so I talked with my supervisor about a flexible schedule so I could work from home with my son. Then by the time I had my second baby I realized I needed to be focused on work about 3-4 full days each week. If I focused on my priorities I could get everything done I needed to do. What did this mean in my life? I am only on one committee. I say “no” a lot to things that interfere with my time with my daughter. I schedule calls, meetings, and events on days that I don’t spend with my daughter. I find that if I have my “mom” hat on that I need to be in full-on mom mode. If I’m in “work-mode” then I need to be in work mode. It’s difficult for me to do both at the same time. So I schedule it very intentionally so I can spend time with my kids. If my son has a long weekend then on that day we’re going on an adventure somewhere: to the children’s museum, library, sledding, or something to make our quality time together meaningful.

Extended family: I have a little sister and brother that I love a lot. How do I fit time in for them? I text or call my brother/sister 2-3 times a week to check in on them to remind him how proud of them I am… or something funny to make them laugh. I set dates to hang out with my little sister or brother and text her to check in regularly. I text or spend time with my parents every few weeks.

Friends: Friend time fills me up, so I plan something with my friends at least 1x month. I have a one friend that I probably text or call almost daily. I need to laugh and have support from my awesome friends.

There are the ways I stay laser focused on my family!

Make today amazing!
